The Department of Child and Family Studies CFS extend from the Child and Family Studies Section of the Department of Applied Life Science. The Department of Applied Life Science was formerly the Department of Home Economics, and was founded by Sr. Urbania SSpS in Beijing in 1940. When Fu Jen Catholic University reopened in Taiwan in 1963, the Department of Home Economics and Nutritional Sciences HENS was founded. Later, the Department of Textiles and Clothing and the Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences separated from the HENS Department. In 1971 the HENS Department of Home Economics and Nutritional Sciences changed its name back to the Department of Home Economics.

In 1986, as the quality of life and state of economy improved in Taiwan, the Department of Home Economics changed its name to the Department of Applied Life Science, and divided its undergraduate program into two majors

: Human Development and Foodservice and Management. Both majors recruited male as well as female students. To meet the needs for more professionals in the field, in line with policies of the Ministry of Education (MOE), incoming classes for the department doubled in 1992, and tripled in 1997. With the approval of the MOE, the Department divided in 1998 into two sections, the Child and Family Studies Section and the Foodservice and Management Section. In the 2001 school year, the Departments established programs for master's degrees to develop more academic professionals. In the 2002 school year, the Child and Family Studies Section became an independent department.
